Rygge Flystasjon Golf Club

Right next to the Rygge airport… no wait… it´s ON the Rygge airport….. This golf course is located ON the Rygge airport right next to the runway!!

Needless to say, this was quite a special experience.

9 hole coursePar: 32 – Length: 1837 meters (Yellow Tees)  – Green Fees: 200 NOK

Description: Open parkland course

This airport is shut down to commercial flights, but there are some military action going on. And in addition to this, the SeaKing Rescue Helicopter base, Squadron 330, is located here.

I´ve never had to hold back a shot on a golf course for a helicopter to fly by before!

Review:
Coming to the course is quite tricky, understandably, since it´s a military base and all. You have to call the greenkeeper to get in. He then meets you at the main military entrance. Then you have to pass through a security gate, deliver your ID for their keeping throughout the round and get a badge to carry along with you. On the way out, the opposite seance occurs… So, contact them a day or two before you want to play, and the process is a lot smoother.

Then you get to drive through the military base, watch old fighter planes, helicopters and missile launchers which were on display.

The course itself is a brilliant little Course. It´s a Park Course with both flat holes and undulated ones. 4 of the holes share a joint green and the two flags on the green are very well marked, so that you know which one you to aim for.
Five par 3´s, three par 4´s and one par 5.
The par 5 hole was really nice. Had to drive over a small pond, dogleg right, and then a 3 wood to the hole. Made a bogie, but hey, it was a cold and wet day. Happy with that!

Greens were green in February! Wet, slow and extremly soft. But cutting the greens was futile, due to how wet it was.

Distance markers were well placed and the tees were easy to find. Even though you have to play back and forth from hole to hole, we had little difficulties finding the next tee.

Fairways are nice and tight next to one another, but that does not matter at all. There are some local rules, such as never go looking for your golf ball on the runway, never shoot if the helicopter is taking off at hole 9 and there are also some OB places where you were definitely not allowed to walk.

The course is maintained by volunteers and was created in 1995. You have to be a Norwegian citizen to become a member and also have to attend a safety course. Quite so special. Nice job you volunteers you!

This course was well worth the visit! I recommend it to everyone who just wants a special experience, practice your irons and just enjoy a cheap round of golf. It´s not like any other golf experience you´ve had before!
