Halfway from Edinburgh and down to the Scottish boarders we found Eyemouth Golf Course, located on the cliff tops of the Berwickshire coastline. A challenging 18 hole gem of a golf course. This course will eat your balls, so to speak, if your club isn’t swinging right.

The course is known to host one of Britain’s most extraordinary hole in the 6th, “Still no Ken”. And “I still don’t know” how to reach that one, specially not on the afternoon we had down there. Wind was overly breezy and even most the Scots dropped out playing, We pretty much had the course to ourselves. A perfect 6 iron made it over on the 115 meters canyon, but not on the green.

Eyemouth has one of the greatest par 3s you will ever play. I’m sure it’s only about 160 yards but it’s over a 50 foot cliff which means short or left your ball is gone forever!

We took the 253 Scottish boarder bus to get there and made a 5-10 minute walk to get the clubhouse, where we were welcomed with a cold pint and a couple of sandwiches. The bacon rolls to go were delicious, and price for the package including a couple Ginger Ales, will defiantly not scare me from going for seconds.

The course kicked us off with a par 5 against the wind. If that was long, the par 4 second requires some length for sure. This time the wind was working wonders and it played short. A par 3 and a par 4 later and we had played our way around the clubhouse. The wise thing would have been to go for seconds and thirds, as the “breeze” and the temperature was still manageable.

We are not Vikings for nothing, we stated, and headed down towards the cliffs and the real wind. The golf was actually not very bad, wind considering, but we did get colder and colder. However, I, for one, did not stop admiring the awesome feeling of playing true links golf. Even got a little bit of rain towards the 13th, the “Hawkness Monter”, Scotlands longest golf hole (656 yards), where I actually missed my short birdie put. But the rain and the wind reminded us that we were alive. We had to play our shots different from what we usually do. We had to play LINKS golf. “When the wind makes the nose glow, keep the little ball low”.

The 17th and 18th made a very nice finish to the round. Not only were the holes nice, they gave us a little break from the wind as well. I am sure Par-Par also helped and the thought of a nice hot coffee from the closed restaurant, that put in extra hours to heat us up.

The club that have been in existence since 1894 and hosted several National Championships, gave me an experience I would love to do over. Although I will order a few degrees more heat. The wind makes it fun, but when the hands are cold as a winter day, topping the ball hurts like a banana in the wrong place.
