Day 5: Going home

Usually on the of travelling home, it is a mixed feeling. Good to get home and not yet ready to leave. The “travel home day” consists of packing and coping with “tiredness” from the trip. This time it was different.

Before leaving we had booked a round of golf. And for the first time on this trip we turned right after sticking to links golf all the previous days. It was time to hide away from the “breeze”. What a day to choose to hide from the wind …. there was not much wind anywhere, well except from the links courses we had already played ….. probably.

I got up at around 8 and told No6 that we had to leave at 9, so I would be in time (and even a little ahead of time) for tee off at 11 on Mortonhall GC.

Ten to nine the Son decided it was time to start packing. So he went to take a shower and was pretty much ready packed after that, meaning we were already 30 minutes late. Yet again there would be play without warm up, not recommend according to the pro’s:

Marc Owenson, PGA Professional

I would always suggest people warm up before a round, just to be ready to score from the first hole not after they have warmed up after a few holes. Warming up prevents injury too so I’d have to say don’t just turn up and play.

Driving to Mortonhall was easy. No issues at all. We were greeted at the pro shop and told to go up and grab a coffee before tee off. So I could have traded the coffee for some warm up, but ended up with neither. I had a nice chat with the Club Master, David Henderson, and a member getting ready for her matchplay tie.

As Junior left for the big city to shop, get a steak and a look at even more watches, I was left by myself. Playing golf is not the worst thing to do when you wander around.

If you’re lonely when you’re alone, you’re in bad company.

I was jammed in between two matchplay ties from ladies members. They where really nice and friendly all of them. Although it meant the round took a wee bit longer than what I usually use when I wander about. To be honest the girls played accurate and fast but was held up by groups in front.

The girls at the 18th Tee

The parkland course of Mortonhall was beautiful, and I can only image how beautiful it would be 3-4 weeks ahead when the blooming really takes place. I did score ok and enjoyed the golf. The highlight being the eagle at the 8th after a 230m spoon landed 2m from the pin.

At the 16th I was invited in by the Tie in front, as their match was done. A nice gesture and that made good company the 3 last holes. At the 18th we where also joined by the Tie behind me. I tee’d off too early, after conferring with the ladies and right afterwards there was some heavy ringing on the bell. My ball was also suspiciously shorter than expected. Still made a nice par, and happy with that.

My eagle hole. The Tie in front was a crowd to add some pressure on the put

At the clubhouse I was treated with a half pint on the ladies. Thanks a bunch for that. That is hospitality for you. As we sat down all five the Club Master came over with a bell and told me you can easily be in trouble with these ladies. Ring the bell if there is an emergency …..

I rang, but a wee bit late. I had to leave for the airport and in a hurry. Met No6 at the airport ride & park and drove to the deliver the car 1 hour before take off. Checkin 50 minutes before was more than enough and we had no issues getting back to Norway, although we had to run through the Customs to make it to the bus in time.
