Day 1 – In love with Ireland

Five happy golfers met at Rygge Lufthavn (airport) more or less 15 minutes late. No wonder they’re happy you might think. And you are right. Not only the fact that we were on our way to Tee off in Ireland, but even more happy by the fact that the women have tendency to not let us leave the house unless there is smile on our face and satisfaction below the belt.

Ryanair was on time, we barely had time the traditional beer on the airport. There was no trouble at all leaving Norway, well apart from The Chef being overweight …. or at least his luggage. Some shuffling around and issue solved.

A flight and a baguette later we were in the taxi to the airport. We had the best-we-can-get driver taking us their. Phrases like “You need to go to Dublin and get some Heather and Bush” and “You don’t want to leave Ireland without trying the women” brought our existing smiles to laughter.

Well inside the stunning clubhouse at St. Margarets Golf and Country Club we met up with Gary in the pro shop. He was all about service and guidance. He was our kind of guy. Pointers were given and off we went. But before we teed off he came over and said that we could pop by the clubhouse after nine for a pint or two. The restaurant was closed, but he had opened it for us as a gesture of hospitality. We already liked Ireland a lot.

Hey Guys, Glad you enjoyed the trip to Dublin and managed to avoid being arrested and locked in a padded cell for the weekend – You guys are mental! I like the photos and comments about the club and course – hope to see you again sometime in Dublin .. or perhaps some of us will come to you and have few beers and some golf – Norway style (5 ball) – Gary PGA Golf Professional. St.Margaret’s, Dublin.

How about the golf? Well first of all. It blew cats out there, or hats if you’d rather … On the driving range we got it right in the face and the 9 Iron barely beat the 100 yards marker. And as we said pur hats blew off, and the ball machine was out of balls.

We decided that our first round this year should be the first of a 3 round stroke competition. Hebbe, being the best golfer, on paper, was first out, and you might as why he decided to hit the three at it’s thickest. The ball never came out. The rest of us survived.

Being the first round none of us where really stable, but the course was brilliant. Full of rabbits, undulations, bunkers and water, not to mention the wind. After nine holes we were all still smiling. And Mamba looked a little sun burned already … or was it the fact that he crushed his approach shot into the pro shop so Gerry could inspect the ball and return it with a little compliment? What a snake, not Gerry, but Mamba of course.

Since the traffic at the course was surprisingly low, we were allowed to play a five-ball. This is not recommended by anyone. Too much time spent although it was very social. Speaking of social, we got our pint of beers at the restaurant and also a nice chat with Tomas, the Slovak that felt alone in Ireland to follow hockey. A nice dude that spoke freely. Again another reason to already like Ireland.

After a pint, the golf felt even better. But Mr Hope himself, Iron Man kept his game up and was unbeatable for the day. Not even ShortSwings effort to get the ball out the water was enough to gain valuable points. The dark struck us at the 18th .

And after a windy day at the golf course it felt perfect to meet up with Sharon at Rathview and get ready to hit town for a dinner and a few drinks. The Chef was his usual self and forgot his shoes in the taxi.

Indy spice was recommended by Sharon along with The Pink Elephant. The best golfer for the day got to pick and he was ready for some Indian hot stuff. The food was excellent and spicy. Some felt it all night in between the Vodka Red Bulls at the Wrights Cafe Bar in Swords. Others felt the burning sensation in their their pretty pink circle the day after.

A perfect start to the trip.
